GIG WORKERS – A REALITY OF NOW
It is an unavoidable fact of our present and in today’s business reality, that there are no longer any jobs for life. This expression has long since fallen apart in the face of new market trends that have changed management paradigms, taken for granted and valid.
It is an unavoidable fact of our present and in today’s business reality, that there are no longer any jobs for life. This expression has long since fallen apart in the face of new market trends that have changed management paradigms, taken for granted and valid.
The era of digitization and advances in robotics gave rise to the reduction of jobs in organizations, and even extinction of some activities. The (almost sonic) speed that characterizes today’s purchasing and sales system, which accelerates all the mechanisms of a business, does not allow any company to remain unscathed when it comes to changes in the system for managing people and resources.
Operations today require fewer people and those that are needed must be flexible and skilled. They have to be individuals capable of changing the ‘chip’ through the projects. Business revolves around projects and flows that can change at any time. Adaptability is a key element for success.
Never being multitask, the multidisciplinary, versatile and proactive was so important to subsist in the job market. Today I am on a project and tomorrow I will be on another. If this was the reality of self-employed workers (most often referred to as freelancers), currently, this is also the reality of employees. We are valued by our ability to embrace new tasks, new ways of working, new teams and new projects. The performance evaluation that is done to us today is premised on this versatility and adaptability, being increasingly important to value teamwork and the ability to achieve results.
The more productive organizations will be more effective the more they focus on teams allocated to specific projects, rather than just individual development. And this is a real mindset revolution when it comes to people management!
Very soon half the workforce is expected to be ‘flexible’ and work away from the typical office, because today too, the office is where the worker is and where the worker is needed. In other words, the workforce will be mixed between full-time workers, consultants, partners, freelancers and part-time, the so-called gig economy workers!
